First Steps to Selling Your Home in Today’s Real Estate Market

There are no assurances when it comes to buying or selling a home. There are some tips however to make your home more attractive to any buyer. There are quite a few things can be done both inside and outside your home to increase the chances of selling your home in today’s real estate market.

Outside the home is the first thing would-be buyers see; spend a little time outside making sure your home looks welcoming. Trim bushes, paint any faded trim, mow the lawn, group yellow flowers together, and make sure the house number is clearly visible. Take a step back and study the outside of your house, make sure it looks inviting and well cared for. Repair or replace anything that looks out of place.

Now inside the house, paint everything white or a neutral tone. Make all repairs necessary including replacing that worn bedspread, missing or damaged light covers, and the ceiling fan blades covered with paint drippings.

Remove all personal memorabilia and clutter around the house. Eliminate personal photos and knick-knacks, and empty kitchen counters. You may consider having a large garage sale before listing your home. Get rid of whatever you don’t want to move with you, and start your packing now with all the personalized items like photos.

Another important step in preparing your home for sale is to organize everything. Alphabetize the spice cabinet, hang similar items together in the closet (shirts all buttoned, facing same direction in one place in closet), make sure all the coffee cup handles face same direction, shoes should neatly lined up. Likely buyers will feel more assured you have taken good care of the house if you take good care of the items in the house.

Next is removal and replacement. Rent a storage unit and remove all unnecessary furniture, and any favorite pieces like the heirloom chandelier. Replace the chandelier, and any other things necessary. Leave just enough furniture for the room to look functional, and have lots of space to move around in.

Lastly, clean like your Mother, Mother-in-Law, and Queen Victoria are going to eat brunch from the kitchen floor tomorrow morning. Your home should smell and look fresh, clean, and new. Vacuum daily, polish chrome faucets and mirrors, remove any cobwebs, bleach or replace any dingy grout or caulking, in general, clean and freshen every nook and cranny.

Following these few simple tips will prepare your home for sale in today’s real estate market, and will help achieve the maximum price possible.
